i
ATTACHMENT 1 to WORK ORDER NUMBER PCS= 1
PILOT ALGAL TURF SCRUBBER SYSTEM FOR PC SOUTH
SCOPE OF WORK
The COUNTY has requested that the CONSULTANT provide , install , and operate a
pilot algal turf scrubber system for the COUNTY ' s PC ( Pollution Control) South Project .
The Work is more particularly described below .
1 Algal Turf Scrubber® Field Investigation ( Pilot) Program
Introduction
The pilot scale investigation of the Algal Turf Scrubber@ (ATSTM ) will simulate the
ATSTM treatment process specific to the water quality conditions associated with the
blending of water from the South Relief Canal and a Reverse Osmosis Concentrate
Water . The results will be used to ( i ) refine periphyton growth and water treatment
projections and ( ii ) optimize the design of a full -scale Algal Turf Scrubber@ Water
Pollution Control Facility .
The CONSULTANT shall furnish , install , and operate a pilot scale ATSTM system for a
6 - month period . Influent water shall be a blend of water from the South Relief Canal
( managed by the Indian River Farms Water Control District or IRFWCD) and an RO
concentrate generated by the Indian River County Utilities Department ( Utilities
Department) . The blend will be such that it is emulative of the expected mix when the
two waters are introduced through discharge of the concentrate into the South Relief
Canal . This blend is expected to be 6 : 1 to 10 : 1 canal water to Concentrate . The Algal
Turf Scrubber@ Mobile Pilot Unit ( MPU ) will be as shown in Figure 1 :
The MPU consists of an aluminum ATSTM floway with support structure , self-
siphoning surger , effluent box , 40 mil EPDM base , and a geotextile grid .
® The MPU floways shall be installed at a design slope of 0 . 5 % . The floway
shall have a width of 1 feet and a length of 500 feet .
® Inflow water samples shall be collected weekly from the surger reservoir via a
time interval refrigerated autosampler and via grab samples for short hold
time parameters . ( See Table 1 )
i Outflow samples shall be collected weekly from the effluent sump via a
second time interval autosampler and via grab samples for short hold time
parameters . ( See Table 1 )
S Water from the South Relief Canal will be analyzed for key parameters via
grab samples collected biweekly . ( See Table 1 )
Concentrate will be analyzed for key parameters via grab samples collected
biweekly . ( See Table 1 )
Testing required through the FDEP Permit 31 FL0037940 issued to the
Utilities Department will be collected via a third autosampler . ( See Table 1 )
2
fApublic works\keithm\stormwater projects\south relief canal screening system and ats\work orders\hydromentia work order pcs- 1 -
pilot plant - 8-23-2010 . doc
