overall General Expenditures <br />The overall expenditures for the county are summarized in Table <br />13.5 for fiscal years 1985-86 through 1989-98 1991-92. -Each <br />category generally includes expenses for capital outlay_ which <br />Capital outlay expenses represent the cost of equipment replacement <br />and additions, minor expansion of facilities and furnishing for <br />buildings. A brief discussion of each expenditure category <br />mentioned in Table 13.5 is provided below. <br />The amounts in the general government services category in Table <br />13.5 represent the expenditures for the legislative, <br />administrative, legal, financial, comprehensive planning and <br />general maintenance functions of the county. In fiscal year 1989- <br />98 1991-92, approximately $1276 15.2 million was spent on these <br />general government services. <br />Public Safety <br />The majority of the public safety expenses in this category are for <br />law enforcement and fire protection for the county's residents. In <br />fiscal year 1989-99 1991-92, the county spent over $26.-9 27.1 <br />million for public safety services. <br />Physical Environment <br />Since utility services and solid waste disposal services are <br />enterprise funds in Indian River County, the physical environment <br />category expenses encompass mestlp--water--trt�3�t�r---servis.-eg; <br />garbage/solid--- W& tew----Mdjftd conservation/resource <br />preservation. A total of $577817984 217,426 was spent on these <br />services in the county in fiscal year 1989-98 1991-92, as stated in <br />Table 13.5. <br />Transportation <br />Indian River County is responsible for transportation facilities <br />such as roads. This category includes the personnel and general <br />maintenance costs of providing roadways, but not the cost of <br />construction and expansion of these facilities. In fiscal year <br />1989-98 1991-92, the county spent over $978 12.5 million providing <br />this service. <br />Economic Environment <br />This category includes veterans services and housing/urban <br />development services. The county spent $2887169 152,612 in fiscal <br />year 1989-98 1991-92 providing these economic environment services. <br />
