BETH MEGLIN OF THE PILOT CLUB APPEARED AND MADE <br />A PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD REGARDING EMERGENCY SYSTEM <br />NUMBER 911 AND REQUESTED AUTHORIZATION TO DESIGNATE -THE BOARD <br />OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AS THE BILLING AGENT FOR THIS 911 <br />SYSTEM. <br />GEORGE PARKER, MARKETING MANAGER FOR SOUTHERN BELL <br />TELEPHONE COMPANY APPEARED AND MADE A PRESENTATION REGARDING <br />A 911 EMERGENCY SYSTEM FOR INDIAN RIVER COUNTY. <br />MR. PARKER STATED THAT THERE WOULD BE A COST OF <br />$80.00 PER MONTH FOR THE SWITCHBOARD AND HE HAS ESTIMATED <br />THE NEED OF POSSIBLY 10 TRUNK LINES AT A COST OF $31.00 PER <br />TRUNK LINE PER MONTH:AND THE COST OF FIVE OPERATORS TO PROVIDE <br />24 HOUR SWITCHBOARD SERVICE. <br />MR. PARKER STATED THAT ALL CALLS WOULD GO THROUGH <br />THE SWITCHBOARD, AND AN OPERATOR WOULD `PATCH IN It TO THE <br />AGENCY NEEDED. <br />IF THE BOARD APPROVES THIS REQUEST, IT WOULD TAKE <br />THE TELEPHONE COMPANY 12 TO 18 MONTHS TO IMPLEMENT IT. VERO <br />BEACH FIRE CHIEF FORREST SMITH APPEARED AND INFORMED.THE <br />BOARD THAT HE HAS SEEN THE 911.EMERGENCY SYSTEM IN OPERATION <br />IN GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA, AND STATED THAT IT IS A VERY EFFICIENT <br />OPERATION AND HE WOULD BE IN FAVOR OF HAVING IT IN INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY. <br />SHERIFF SAM T. JOYCE APPEARED AND STATED THAT HIS <br />OFFICE ANSWERED 17,000 EMERGENCY CALLS PER YEAR; VERO BEACH <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT ABOUT II,000 CALLS AND THE CITY FIRE DEPART- <br />MENT ABOUT 1,300 CALLS AND STATED THAT HE WOULD BE IN FAVOR <br />OF THIS 911 PROJECT. <br />MRS. MEGLIN STATED THAT THIS PRESENTATION HAS BEEN <br />MADE TO THE CITY OF VERO BEACH, CITY OF SEBASTIAN, AND TOWN OF <br />INDIAN RIVER SHORES, AND THEY HAVE EXPRESSED APPROVAL OF THE <br />PROJECT.
