RESOLUTION NO. 2007- 134 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />AUTHORIZING APPLICATION TO THE FLORIDA GREEN <br />BUILDING COALITION, INC. FOR CERTIFICATION OF <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY AS A CERTIFIED FLORIDA GREEN <br />LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND TO DEMONSTRATE A <br />SIGNIFICANT COMMITMENT ON THE PART OF INDIAN <br />RIVER COUNTY GOVERNMENT TO ESTABLISH POLICIES, <br />GUIDELINES, GOALS, AND STRATEGIC ACTIONS TO <br />PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY. <br />WHEREAS, sustainability means satisfying our present needs without <br />compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs; and <br />WHEREAS, on July 13, 2007, Governor Crist signed Executive Order <br />No. 07-126 directing the State Department of Management Services to <br />implement Green Building and Energy Conservation Standards for State <br />buildings; and <br />WHEREAS, the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners <br />("County") is committed to lead by demonstrating sustainable stewardship that <br />will yield cost savings to taxpayers by reducing County operating costs, <br />providing healthy work environments for County staff and visitors, protecting, <br />conserving, and enhancing the County's resources, and establishing community <br />guidelines for sustainable living practices; and <br />WHEREAS, the County is committed to designing, constructing, and <br />operating County facilities to minimize environmental impacts by incorporating <br />the use of resource and energy efficient materials, renewable resources, <br />alternative energy sources, water conservation, waste reduction, and pollution <br />prevention where economically feasible; and <br />WHEREAS, the County intends to establish policies, guidelines, goals <br />and strategic actions that will result in: <br />• a more sustainable community <br />• the use of renewable resources <br />• energy, water and cost savings through the construction, operation <br />and maintenance of high performance buildings and landscapes <br />• the procurement of environmentally preferred products, materials and <br />services <br />• increased recycling and materials reuse <br />• historical preservation <br />• waste reduction at the source <br />1 <br />
