• <br />FAMILIAR WITH FDOT'S REQUIREMENTS AND CODING FORMS. HE AFFIRMED THAT <br />THE PRELIMINARY INSPECTION, FOLLOWED BY A COMPREHENSIVE INSPECTION, <br />IS MOST EFFICIENT. MR. ROBBINS SAID THEY WOULD LOCATE ALL THE BRIDGES <br />IN THE COUNTY, CLASSIFY THEM ACCORDING TO THEIR STRUCTURE TYPES AND <br />PHOTOGRAPH THEM; THEN PREPARE A LOCATION MAP, WHICH WOULD HAVE.THE <br />BRIDGES IDENTIFIED, GIVING THE STATUS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL STRUCTURE. <br />HE CONTINUED THAT THERE WOULD BE COLOR CODING TO SHOW THE CURRENT STATUS. <br />MR. ROBBINS SAID THEY WOULD PERFORM A CURSORY INSPECTION TO SEE IF <br />THERE WERE ANY SAFETY PROBLEMS, AND IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE COUNTY OF <br />ANY PROBLEMS. HE FURTHER REPORTED THAT THE BRIDGES WOULD BE CLASSIFIED <br />TO ESTABLISH AN INSPECTION ROUTE AND BY USING THIS CLASSIFICATION <br />SYSTEM, SPECIAL PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT COULD BE MINIMIZED. MR. ROBBINS <br />EMPHASIZED THAT SCHEDULING IS A CRITICAL ITEM, ALSO THE MANNER IN WHICH <br />THE REPORT IS PREPARED. <br />GREGG EDMONDS EXPLAINED TO THE BOARD THAT THE DOT HAS GUIDE- <br />LINES AND THE COUNTIES ARE CHARGED WITH FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH THEIR <br />SIA FORMS. HE CONTINUED THAT ONCE THEIR CREW IS ON THE SITE, THEY <br />CAN USE FORMS THEY HAVE TAILORED TO THE SIA FORMS, WHICH WILL BE SENT <br />TO THE STATE. MR. EDMONDS NOTED THAT THE FIRST PART OF THE FORM IS <br />GENERALIZATION AND THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BRIDGE, AND ADVISED THAT <br />THE DOT'S DEFINITION OF A STRUCTURE IS ONE THAT SPANS 20' OR GREATER; <br />THEREFORE, WE MAY HAVE CULVERTS THAT FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY. HE <br />STATED THAT DEFICIENCIES ARE NOTED IN THE BRIDGE COMPONENTS, JOINT <br />SYSTEMS IN THE CONCRETE STRUCTURES, AND ON ANY UTILITIES THAT MIGHT BE <br />ON THE BRIDGE. MR. EDMONDS SAID THAT FIRST THEY DO A DETAILED INSPEC- <br />TION OF THE DECK AND THEN THE CREW MOVES INTO THE SUPERSTRUCTURE OF <br />THE BRIDGE; THE BEAMS ARE CHECKED, ANY UTILITIES THAT MIGHT BE SUS- <br />PENDED; AND THEN THE UNDERSIDE OF THE STRUCTURE. HEATHEN EXPLAINED <br />THAT IN THE'SUPERSTRUCTURE INSPECTION, WHICH NECESSITATES GETTING INTO <br />THE PILINGS AND FOOTINGS, AND WHERE THEY FALL WITHIN THE WATER, THEIR <br />UNDERWATER ENGINEER MAKES HIS INSPECTION. MR. EDMONDS NOTED THAT THE <br />LAST ITEM TO BE CHECKED IS THE APPROACHING ROADWAYS, AND THE FOLLOWING• <br />ARE INSPECTED: ALIGNMENT, THE GUARDRAIL, SHOULDERS, AND -THE EMBANKMENT. <br />HE CONTINUED THAT DOT IS MAINLY INTERESTED IN THE SAFETY ASPECT AND <br />MAY 2 41979 <br />12 <br />BOOK fACE <br />
