<br />• Historical Trends in Housing Development
<br />Prior to 1960, fewer than 10,000 residences existed in Indian River County. Of that number, more
<br />than half had been built in the decade from 1950 to 1960. As shown in Table 7.1, the county's
<br />housing stock increased from 9,703 units in 1960 to 73,798 units in 2005. These figures were
<br />derived from the decennial censuses conducted in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000, as well as a
<br />2005 county planning department estimate.

<br />In 2000, 3 7.3 1 % of all housing units were located within the municipalities of Indian River County.
<br />At that time, approximately 66% of all housing units were owner -occupied, approximately 19%
<br />were renter -occupied, and the remaining units were reported as vacant. Overall, the percentage of
<br />owner -occupied units versus renter -occupied units is comparable for the municipalities and the
<br />unincorporated county.
