The Sheriff's Department has notified and <br />offered assistance to the Indian River County Commission in all areas of <br />non-compliance which would be the responsibility of the County Commission <br />to correct. <br />A Policy and Procedure Workshop was conducted at the Indian River County <br />Sheriff's Office on November 19-20, 1981 by Voorhis Associates, Inc. on <br />a grant approved by the National Institue of Corrections. This meeting <br />was originally scheduled for August 18-19, 1981 but was postponed by the <br />Air Trafffic Controllers strike. <br />- The County Commission hired an architect in November 1981 to address the <br />issue of repairing the areas of non-compliance which would be their <br />responsibility. The County Engineer, Jim Davis, has forwarded a set of <br />plans to Percy Folson (Department of Corrections) to the best of the <br />Sheriff's Department's knowledge, for approval: <br />On -June 29-30, 1981, the Sheriff's Department sponsored a Phase I meeting <br />that was conducted by Voorhis Associates, Inc. in association with the <br />National InstituB of Corrections, to begin the groundwork for planning <br />a new jail facility. In November members of the County Commission, County <br />Administrator's office, and Sheriff's Department attended a NIC Phase II <br />meeting to insure proper planning of a new jail facility. <br />The most immediate area of non-compliance is a secure secondary egress <br />from the female cell block. This problem was addressed by the County <br />Commission, Architect John Calmes, Engineer Jim Davis, Capt. Baird. Davis <br />has submitted the plans to Percy Folson. This problem was addressed along <br />with other facility deficiencies and work is expected to start in the very <br />near future. The Sheriff's Department was advised that the County has / <br />allotted $70,000.00 to remedy the problems of the jail building. V <br />The following section will address the 35 areas of non-compliance found <br />in a Department of Corrections Inspection on 10-21-81 by Inspectors <br />Pimm & McLain. <br />
