Commissioner Fletcher commented that he understands Mr. <br />Schaefer's feelings on the increase in property values <br />because the same thing has happened at -his home which he <br />never intends to sell. He continued that he had hoped to be <br />able to do something about this, but after two years on the <br />Commission, he feels that he is sitting here as a puppet for <br />the state, extracting money out of his constituent's pockets <br />to send to Tallahassee, and he sees no way as one <br />Commissioner he can stop this. <br />Commissioner Lyons pointed out that there is an awful <br />lot of money that does not go to Tallahassee but is raised <br />to provide services for this county. He did agree that the <br />way Tallahassee insists we explain some of these things <br />creates a large problem for all of us. <br />Commissioner Wodtke noted that in the eight years he <br />has been on the Commission, he has been very concerned about <br />the working people who provide the services and the values <br />in the tax structure. He agreed you cannot always <br />accomplish what you want, and there are mandates which are <br />tough to meet. <br />Chairman Scurlock pointed out that we have tried to go <br />away from ad valorem taxes and go to user fees. <br />William Koolage, County citizen, wished that one of the <br />Commissioners would mention some of the things mandated by <br />Tallahassee which we must pay for, such as the Baker Act, <br />the Myers Act, the bridges we took over, the inadequate <br />funding, etc. <br />Discussion ensued on the indigents the County must pay <br />medical bills for; the court system where we must pay for <br />24 <br />r <br />
