SOLID WASTE SUB -ELEMENT <br />OBJECTIVE.2 Special Waste and Hazardous Waste <br />By 1992, the county will have appropriate equipment and sufficient <br />capacity for the management of special wastes and hazardous waste. <br />There will be a 50% decrease in the number of cases of improperly <br />managed and illegally disposed of hazardous waste in the county. <br />POLICY 2.1: The county shall dispose of stabilized sludge <br />from wastewater treatment plants at the designated facility <br />at the,Gifford Wastewater Plant, at the county sod farm, at <br />the- county owned citrus groves, and other sites approved by <br />"e DER <br />POLICY 2.2: The county shall dispose of the screenings and <br />grit accumulated at the wastewater treatment plants at the <br />county landf-fll. <br />POLICY 2.3: Since 1989, the county has not and will not <br />accept septage at the county landfill. The current local <br />ordinance will continue to require all septage haulers <br />operating in the county to dispose of se gage at . the <br />designated facility at.the Gifford Wastewater Treatment Plant <br />and other sites approved by FDtH. <br />POLICY 2.4: By 1991, the county, shall submit a written <br />request to the County Public. Health Unit, Division of <br />nvironmental Health to increase thenumber of inspections of l <br />septic tanksused bind —4 - al-d—commercial-1--ent <br />producing hazardous waste by products in order to eliminate <br />illegal dumping of such wastes and to ensure that hazardous <br />waste will be disposed of in accordance with the Solid Waste <br />Disposal District procedures. <br />POLICY 2.5: By 1992, the county shall prepare and distribute <br />to generators of hazardous waste a document describing <br />acceptable management and disposal techniques. The county <br />shall utilize the media by means of news releases, articles, <br />and media notifications to educate the general public of <br />appropriate ways of handling solid waste -and hazardous waste. <br />The county will provide two amnesty days per year wherein <br />homeowners are allowed to bring in hazardous waste for <br />disposal free of charge. <br />POLICY 2.6: By 1991, the county—shall require that a .1 new <br />applications for occupational licenses include a four digit <br />Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code to facilitate <br />identification of potential hazardous waste and bio -medical <br />waste generators. The county shall provide this information <br />to the Solid Waste Disposal District. <br />POLICY 2.7: By 1991, the county shall acquire a tire shred- <br />der to handle the large number of tires received at the <br />landfill, buy a pathogenic incinerator for the disposal of <br />dead animals and expand the temporary storage facility at the <br />landfill for residentially generated ste.
