Commissioner Wodtke requested copies of the proposed <br />letter to support an amendment to the Tourist Development <br />Tax law be sent to John Thomas, Executive Director of the <br />State Association of County Commissioners, with the request <br />to lobby intently on our behalf. <br />THE QUESTION WAS CALLED by Chairman Bird. <br />It was voted on and carried 4-0. <br />Chairman Bird asked the County Attorney for his assis- <br />tance in drafting the letter and also suggested asking for <br />the support of the League of Cities. <br />REPORT - TREASURE COAST SEWAGE SYSTEM <br />Commissioner Lyons requested an explanation of how it <br />happened that the County is accused of polluting the Trea- <br />sure Coast sewage system as reported in today's newspaper. <br />Terry Pinto, Director of Utilities, explained that the <br />County had inherited an extremely bad water system and were <br />in the process of -changing it into an efficient one. The <br />Pollution occurred because the County is presently using a <br />chlorine system that uses a single -cylinder of gas, and if <br />the bottle is allowed to run out, there is a lapse of a <br />short period of time when no chlorine is present in the <br />System. Mr. Pinto felt that a new mode of chlorination which <br />*ill induce much higher levels of chlorine will make it <br />Unnecessary to worry about the bottle running out. <br />Commissioner Lyons emphasized that it is the respon- <br />sibility of the County to keep the system chlorinated and to <br />set an example. He did not see how we can deal with pol- <br />lution violations in other areas when we have not kept our <br />own house in order and believed someone is due for some <br />discipline for allowing this to happen. <br />Mr. Pinto noted that he has the same concerns.
