r AUG 17 1983 <br />6AG1f PAu <br />total cost to outfit the boat with a trailer and Coast Guard <br />approved equipment - compass, radios, flood lights, first <br />aid kits, boat hooks, etc., would be about $35,000. This <br />would include maintenance and gas for the first year. To <br />staff the boat with one man would be about $15,000 the first <br />year, and a vehicle is needed to tow it, which would bring <br />the total cost to implement this program to about $60,000. <br />Commissioner Lyons asked why they only needed one man, <br />and Sheriff Dobeck stated they planned to use the boat about <br />5 to 6 days a week on a one shift basis; they have some <br />bonded deputies who can assist and need one full-time man <br />who would be strictly assigned to this duty. The boat would <br />be kept on a trailer and launched where it is needed. <br />Commissioner Scurlock asked if it would be used for <br />such things as monitoring water skiing, etc., and the <br />Sheriff confirmed that it will be used on weekends for <br />monitoring those type activities; it is not related to <br />controlling drug traffic. He continued that he did not <br />expect a decision today, but just an indication from the <br />Board as to whether he should pursue implementing a marine <br />division at an anticipated cost of $60,000 the first year, <br />the money for implementation to be from confiscated <br />funds. - <br />Commissioner Lyons believed this is needed. <br />Community Services Director Thomas asked if the Sheriff <br />thought we could work with using auxiliary in regard to <br />increasing our Park Patrol, specifically on the beaches <br />rather than having to come in with a police car. <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed one of the first <br />questions we have to check with Attorney Brandenburg is <br />whether this is an acceptable use for confiscated funds, and <br />Sheriff Dobeck informed the Board that he checked with the <br />Florida Sheriff's Association's attorney,..and it was his <br />opinion that as long as the funds are used to implement a <br />85 <br />
