1 <br />NOV 16 1993 �A <br />present courtroom, and he wondered if the judicial system <br />really would be happy with it. <br />Attorney Sullivan made the point that all the judges <br />and lawyers, as well as the Clerk, have met and made their <br />wishes known, and the plan designed by Architect Calmes <br />satisfies all of them even though the renovated courtroom <br />may not be as large as they could wish. <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed we are kidding ourselves <br />when we talk about this courtroom only being used for 3-5 <br />years; he noted we are talking about a ten year bond issue <br />for the jail project, and it could be even longer. <br />Attorney Sullivan agreed that any courtroom the Commis- <br />sion builds will be the one all the lawyers here will deal <br />with indefinitely, and whether they can get a larger <br />courtroom or not, they definitely need an additional <br />courtroom. <br />Attorney George Moss agreed with Attorney Sullivan and <br />emphasized that' our court system is mandated. He informed <br />the Board that he was just involved in a case in which there <br />were 120 exhibits, and it took the Deputy Clerk and the <br />Bailiff 30 minutes each night just to lock them up. He <br />further noted that there are security problems with large <br />cases. Attorney Moss felt it is time for the Commission to <br />"bite the bullet" and face that there is a need and there is <br />no way around it. <br />Attorney Miles Mank added his support,to Attorneys Moss <br />and Sullivan, emphasizing that the fourth courtroom is an <br />absolute necessity. <br />Chairman Bird asked Mr. Calmes for a ballpark figure on <br />the additional money it would require for him to go into <br />construction drawings on his proposal. <br />Mr. Calmes estimated roughly that architectural fees <br />from this point to completion of construction drawings and <br />124 <br />
