MAY 2 3 1994 Boos 5 7 PAGE 24' <br />- the jack system, etc. We have had many opportunities for <br />the public to speak and be heard, and they will continue to <br />be heard. <br />Commissioner Wodtke wished there were some other <br />alternatives than sand pumping, but at this point believed <br />the only alternative is to do this or do nothing, and this, <br />at least, will put sand back into the overall system where <br />it will benefit everyone in the county. He then reported <br />that the Beach Restoration and Preservation Committee met <br />yesterday for three hours, and he believed within a month or <br />60 days they will be able to come back with good recommenda- <br />tions re funding. In regard to saying that he is not in <br />favor of going to referendum, he noted that we have spent <br />monies for bicycle paths - sidewalks - recreation, etc., <br />without holding referendums. Commissioner Wodtke believed <br />this is an issue governmental bodies need to look at. <br />However, even though he realized Representative Nelson <br />is in a very difficult position and has been told that he is <br />representing the elected officials, but not necessarily the <br />people, he felt the Board would be criticized for voting on <br />the issue of a referendum today without having had it <br />published on the agenda. <br />Commissioner Lyons noted that the statement that keeps <br />coming to his mind is what happens if they do nothing. He <br />believed it will never end up that they do nothing. If the <br />beach is not renourished, there undoubtedly will be sea <br />walls put up for the protection of property, which would <br />simply accelerate the problem of the remaining beach, and we <br />very shortly would have no beach in the middle of Vero <br />Beach. There cannot be nothing done. <br />Commissioner Wodtke believed the City Council right now <br />is considering putting a sea wall in the area of Sexton <br />Plaza.
