r1 <br />SEP 10 1984 BOOK 58 PAGE 21® <br />to "bite the bullet" now and authorize one million dollars <br />for the complex: He pointed out that there is a great deal <br />of office space available in the downtown area where the <br />States Attorney and Public Defender could go. <br />Administrator Wright agreed, but pointed out that he is <br />talking renting rather than owning, and we are trying to <br />look ahead and not piecemeal. <br />P.M. <br />Commissioner Lyons entered the meeting at 1:44 o'clock <br />Considerable debate ensued regarding what could be done <br />with the Courthouse if the court system was eventually moved <br />out, the comparable size of the various courtrooms, the <br />logistic problems involved for the Clerk in moving her <br />deputies around to various locations, the delay that would <br />be involved in building a new facility, etc. The Adminis- <br />trator continued to argue that the choice is whether to <br />patch something together now and then build in three to five <br />years or to move ahead and build it now; he believed the <br />money says build it now. <br />Commissioner Bird asked the States Attorney and Public <br />Defender if we did go ahead and build whether they would <br />need office space out there, and Attorney Stone stated that <br />the fact that they are right next to the courtroom is unique <br />in Indian River County, but it certainly is a convenience. <br />He stressed that their increasing need for additional office <br />space will never become less and urged that the Board look <br />far enough ahead, certainly farther than two or three years. <br />Public Defender Schwarz stated that he would more or <br />less echo Attorney Stone. He informed the Board that in St. <br />Lucie County, they tried to separate their offices and <br />locate the misdemeanor and fine intake sections in a <br />different location, but At did not work out.
