Galanis, M.p.@EFERENCES: <br />Director, Environmental Health <br />The Indian River County Public Health Unit(IRCPHU), Environmental <br />Health Section conducts ongoing programs in the plan review, in- <br />spection and regulation of over 2000 separate establishments in <br />Indian River County. These will result in over 5000 separate in- <br />spections for FY 84-85. These regulatory functions involve water, <br />sewage, food, Migrant labor camp, trailer park, swimming pools, and <br />other public health and environmentally related establishments. <br />Additionally, over 1000 citizen complaints are answered annually <br />by staff of this department. The department utilizes existing <br />Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Codes as standards <br />when conducting these inspections. When problems are encountered, <br />as they often are, we find the majority of citizens cooperative <br />and willing to make corrections. Unfortunately, this is not al- <br />ways the case. Many times we must proceed to enforcement activities <br />to promote these minimum standards. <br />Current mechanism for enforcement lies in contacting the county or <br />states attorney and requesting his or her asistance in filing <br />criminal charges against the offending party. While these indi- <br />viduals are cooperative, we are often reluctant to involve their <br />time when they are overloaded with important county matters or <br />criminal matters for the sheriff's department.
