SEP 11 . 1985 <br />BOOK PAGE 42 <br />Commissioner Wodtke asked how much of the 1.2 million pro- <br />grammed for Indian River County would be for routine maintenance, <br />and Mr. Register felt probably half. <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed we need to focus in on three <br />things. First, we want to be sure that a fair share of the money <br />appropriated to this district comes to us. Second, we need to <br />establish priorities by working with the D.O.T. re surfacing, <br />litter pickup, mowing, etc. Third, would be to have some sort <br />of participation by local government whereby we can receive some <br />dollars if we have county people do this work. He noted that we <br />have had this past year situations on the Route 60 corridor where <br />you literally could not see a passenger vehicle from one side to <br />the other. This is not a safe situation, and the corridors into <br />our community project the image of our community. <br />Chairman Lyons stressed his belief that we have to make sure <br />the basic level provided by the state is sufficient as we do not <br />want a situation where the state does nothing and we do it all; <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed the message Tallahassee is <br />sending us is that they yielded to the desire for local control <br />and now they will let the counties do more. He noted they did <br />give us the gas tax option to provide funds. <br />Commissioner Wodtke believed in years past the D.O.T. mowed <br />on a basic schedule of every three to four weeks, but now it is <br />much less often. He asked what the routine schedule is now. <br />Mr. Fowler assured the Board that he did understand their <br />concerns, especially about gateways into cities, etc. He stated <br />they will work with local government and believed they need to <br />have these kinds of discussion with every county and city and <br />come to some understanding re the roads about which there is a <br />particular concern, particularly from the aesthetic standpoint. <br />On the issue of adequate funding for maintenance, he noted that <br />several years ago a Senator from Miami got on a real crusade <br />about going after D.O.T. maintenance; he got people in the <br />Legislature to listen; and now there has been a tendency to take <br />42 <br />
