PROCLAMATION SC <br />DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 14 - 20, 2016, <br />AS THROUGH WITH CHEW WEEK <br />WHEREAS, the tobacco industry entices young people and non-traditional users with kid -friendly <br />flavorings in smokeless products like chew, dip, snus, and snuff; and, <br />WHEREAS, 5.4% of high school students and 1.8% of middle school students in Indian River <br />County use smokeless tobacco; and, <br />WHEREAS, adolescent nicotine use of any kind can disrupt the formation of brain circuits that <br />control attention, learning, and susceptibility to addiction, leaving adolescents more easily addicted to <br />nicotine than adults; and, once adolescents start using one tobacco product, they are more likely to <br />use multiple tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, and electronic cigarettes; and <br />WHEREAS, smokeless tobacco users are exposed to 28 cancer-causing chemicals, and have an <br />80% higher risk of oral cancer and 60% higher risk of pancreatic and esophageal cancer and may <br />suffer mouth sores, gum recession, tooth decay, discoloration of teeth, and gingivitis which can lead <br />to bone and tooth loss; and, <br />WHEREAS, the tobacco industry systematically uses techniques to increase tobacco use among <br />youth including candy -flavored products, marketing with youth -resonant themes such as rebellion, <br />glamour, celebrity endorsements, sports and music sponsorships; and, <br />WHEREAS, young people generally tend to believe that flavored smokeless tobacco products are <br />less harmful than the non -flavored versions. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the week of February 14 — 20, 2016, be recognized as <br />Through with Chew Week in Indian River County, and the Board encourages all citizens to make <br />publically known the dangers of smokeless tobacco use and to also urge spit tobacco users to <br />demonstrate to themselves, their friends, and their families that they can quit Chew Tobacco. <br />Adopted this 16th day of February, 2016.
