He believed they are <br />trying to curb excessive use of the tax exempt rate for <br />non-governmental purposes. <br />Chairman Scur-: o_ -E% tihanked Mr. Sieck and Mr. Diamond for <br />their efforts and their cooperation and felt they and their firms, <br />are doing a good job for the county. <br />DISCUSSION - PUBLIC DEFENDER BUDGET <br />= Assistant County Attorney Wilson advised the Board of the <br />budget problems of the Public Defender's office, noting that when <br />the Public Defender does not have sufficient staff to handle his <br />caseload, he can withdraw from a case, but the courts have held <br />that this will amount to an effective denial of counsel and they <br />can appoint an attorney for the defendant. The courts in this <br />circuit have a formula based on $35 an hour for out-of-court work <br />and $50 an hour for in -court work, and there is a maximum of <br />$1,000 for a misdemeanor case, but since we have seen over 500 <br />misdemeanor cases in one year, this represents a considerable <br />expense.
