Commissioner Bird believed it would be easier <br />for all of us if this project was not located in a county <br />enclave, but felt that because of the smallness of the facility, <br />it will not have serious or negative impact on the residents of <br />Indian River Shores. He pointed out that the beach clubs for <br />Riomar and Johns Island are good examples of this. <br />Commissioner Wheeler stated that he also is in support of <br />the Grand Harbor project, but has a problem with the beach club <br />because he still feels that it is at least a semi -commercial use <br />in a residential area and would set a precedent for future <br />special exception requests. He felt it is too small an area to <br />accommodate residents from 3 different residential projects and <br />had a problem with pedestrians having to cross AIA to get to <br />their cars. In conclusion, Commissioner Wheeler felt the Board - <br />should give heavy consideration to the input from the Town <br />Council. <br />Commissioner Eggert also agreed that Grand Harbor is a <br />wonderful benefit to this community, but noted that she received <br />50 phone calls yesterday from people in her district objecting <br />to the proposed beach club. She stated she would not vote for <br />it because she feels it would be setting a precedent. <br />Commissioner Bowman agreed with everything that has been <br />said in opposition to the beach club, and stated she would not <br />vote for it. She recalled that she served many long hours with <br />the Hutchinson Island Study Committee and felt this is not <br />consistent with that plan. <br />Chairman Scurlock emphasized that the County has a master <br />plan to provide recreational facilities and beach access and is <br />planning to acquire two more pieces of beachfront property, <br />which will provide extensive access to the beach in the north <br />part of the county. He pointed out that the Town of Indian <br />River Shores cooperated in the beach acquisition plan by <br />choosing to tax themselves at a very high level to support the <br />$5 -million beach bond issue, and believed they did so because <br />36 BOOK f'F�UE <br />
