Proclamation - National Beach Safety Week <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />WHEREAS, over 400 swimmers drown each year in the State of <br />Florida, leaving many grieving loved ones; and <br />WHEREAS, the UNITED STATES LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION hopes to <br />call the public's attention to water safety measures that may <br />help lower the drowning rate for our counties; and <br />WHEREAS, the UNITED STATES LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION and its <br />membership of open water professional lifeguards want to alert <br />the swimming public to the following safety tips when entering <br />large bodies of open water: <br />1. Swim parallel to shore when swimming long distances <br />2. Know your limits; do not rely on flotation devices <br />3. Ask about rip currents and dangerous marine life <br />4. Avoid foolish diving in shallow water and off piers <br />and jetties <br />5. Keep glass off the beach <br />6. Drinking, drugs and swimming do not mix <br />7. Swimming alone is dangerous; share the fun with a <br />friend; and <br />WHEREAS, the UNITED STATES LIFESAVING ASSOCIATION CHAPTERS <br />from coast to coast urge you to SWIM SAFELY - SWIM NEAR A <br />LIFEGUARD; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT 'PROCLAIMED that the BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA does hereby <br />designate the week of July 1 - July 7, 1987 as <br />NATIONAL BEACH SAFETY WEEK <br />in Indian River County, and urges all citizens to become more <br />aware of water safety measures that may save lives and lower the <br />drowning rate in Indian River County. <br />Adopted this 23rd day of June, 1987. <br />16 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />" �� G <br />Z � /r" W� <br />DON C.
