JUL 1987 BOOK 's ! ,jE 11 <br />Mr. Vickers felt the whole thing has been done after the <br />fact, and that was the reason he was opposed to it. <br />Chairman Scurlock asked if staff has explained to the owner <br />what can and what cannot be done there, and Planning & <br />Development Director Robert Keating reported that the owner is in <br />front of the Code Enforcement Board for the illegal storage of <br />building materials; in addition, he started land clearing and <br />ditching before obtaining the proper permits. <br />Bernie Roberts, president of Gator Lumber, explained that <br />they were under the impression that they owned the property where <br />the ditch was dug because they took the advice of an employee, <br />who is no longer with the firm. After that, they came in and <br />asked the County what they were doing wrong and what they should <br />do to correct the situation. Randy Mosby, their new engineer on <br />the project, guided them in their site planning and obtainment of <br />all required permits. Mr. Roberts admitted that they did buy the <br />steel building a bit earlier, but did so in order to avoid an 110 <br />increase in price. After the steel building was purchased, they <br />were kind of stuck, because they found out there was no other <br />place in the county for it to be stored. He advised that they <br />have filed for a site plan and are filing this week for a <br />building permit. While the firm could operate in the current <br />zoning, they feel it would be more appropriate in the CH zoning. <br />He urged the Commission to approve the rezoning request. <br />Commissioner Bowman asked if Mr. Roberts had walked the <br />property before it was purchased, and Mr. Roberts replied that he <br />just had ridden across the property as he has trouble walking. <br />He explained that prior to purchasing the land, they cleared out <br />by backhoe just enough of the jungle to test the ground in the <br />spots where they were planning to install the building and found <br />that there was about 6" of rotted, decayed material before <br />hitting sand. <br />Commissioner Bowman felt it was a big mistake that this <br />property was purchased for this reason, because what they bought <br />35 <br />
