year, and if we are going to have a dredge in that area, she <br />suggested we also take care of the Wabasso Causeway area, which <br />is serious condition. <br />Commissioner Bird agreed it would be advantageous to have <br />two projects, and Director Davis confirmed we have $40,000 in the <br />R&B budget for the dredging at Wabasso. <br />Commissioner Wheeler sympathized with these folks and their <br />dilemma, but noted that this is not a problem simply in this one <br />area. He felt there may be some leverage for the county to pay <br />the cost of getting the permits, but felt if we go in and dredge <br />canals that will be something we will have to look at <br />countywide. <br />Chairman Scurlock agreed that this is a big issue, and the <br />same situation exists in many other subdivisions along the river, <br />Vero Isles and Vero Shores being just two of them. The Chairman <br />was supportive of working with the group here today and did think <br />the County has some responsibility, which he believed we can <br />identify, but he agreed we need to do this carefully and in a <br />proper way because we cannot just jump in and set a precedent <br />that we maintain these canals. <br />Commissioner Eggert concurred that we don't want to get into <br />the canal dredging business, but she also felt that possibly the <br />bridge did bring us a responsibility we do not have in other <br />areas. Board members agreed. <br />Discussion continued re various alternatives, including an <br />MSTU, and Commissioner Wheeler noted that possibly we could <br />coordinate projects to make it more economical. <br />Mr. Nelson commented that since the people on the canal pay <br />taxes 100-150% higher, one solution would be to lower their <br />taxes, but the Board pointed out that is not under their <br />jurisdiction. <br />Nr.
