substantial percentage of right angle collisions that can be <br />corrected by the 4 -way stop. He believed the 4 -way stop is <br />working well on 20th Avenue and 4th Street. <br />Commissioner Bird noted that although he is basically <br />opposed to 4 -way stops, he has a hard time sitting here and <br />voting against one when the people whose opinion he respects, <br />tells him that it would make the intersection safer. <br />Commissioner Wheeler stated that he also is opposed to 4 -way <br />stops, but he Likes the idea that it will accustom the people <br />using that intersection to stopping there. <br />Commissioner Bowman did not like 4 -way stops either, but she <br />felt after you put up the warning signs that you are going to <br />have a 4 -way stop and then implement it, if we could put <br />policemen there during the heavy traffic hours, possibly we could <br />educate people in the county as to how a 4 -way stop is supposed <br />to operate. She did not believe it is well understood. <br />Commissioner Eggert agreed that it is not, and she felt <br />strongly that there are some other things that we can do at that <br />corner. The vegetation growth must be kept down, and it isn't <br />being done. <br />THE CHAIRMAN CALLED FOR THE QUESTION on the Motion <br />to deny a 4 -way stop. <br />It was voted on and failed 2 to 3, with Commissioners <br />Bird, Bowman and Wheeler voting in opposition. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Bowman, SECONDED by Commis- <br />sioner Bird, Commissioner Eggert and Chairman Scurlock <br />voting in opposition, the Board by a 3 to 2 vote approved <br />putting a temporary 4 -way stop at the intersection of <br />8th St. and 20th Avenue. <br />21 <br />SEP 20 1988 <br />POCK 74 4 F,,kcif3Q5 <br />
