JAN 2 41989 <br />600. <br />�� <br />a., 6 <br />e � r <br />Commissioner Bird requested the addition of a brief report <br />on the Gifford Community Center and a postponement of the Parks <br />and Recreation Committee Report until the meeting of 1/31/89. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Eggert, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Scurlock, the Board unanimously added <br />and postponed the above items to today's Agenda. <br />PRESENTATION BY VERO BEACH MAYOR KEN MACHT OF RESOLUTION 89-06 <br />EXPRESSING THE CITY'S SUPPORT FOR THE LOCAL OPTION ONE -CENT SALES <br />TAX <br />Vero Beach Mayor Ken Macht presented the following <br />resolution to the Board of County Commissioners: <br />RESOLUTION NO. 89-06 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF VERO BEACH, <br />FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE <br />LOCAL OPTION ONE -CENT SALES TAX <br />AUTHORIZED PURSUANT TO CHAPTER <br />212.055, FLORIDA STATUTES. <br />WHEREAS, local governments in Florida, and in Indian River County In <br />particular, have been mandated by the State of Florida to provide ever Increasing <br />types and levels of service to the residents of our community, and <br />WHEREAS. the cost of these services must be porne by the local governments, <br />which In most cases means additional property tax burden, and <br />WHEREAS, to remedy this situation the Florida Legislature has recently enacted <br />a local option sales tax, which would allow local governments to, by ordinance, <br />adopt a one -cent local option sales tax, If approved by referendum of the voters, <br />which revenue can be used for capital expenditures only. and <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County is presently drafting an ordinance calling for a <br />referendum to approve such a one -cent local option sales tax for 15 years, and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Vero Beach will receive a portion of the sales tax <br />revenue, pursuant to 5218.62, Florida Statutes, which City share for the first <br />year of the tax Is estimated at $1,240,000.00, and <br />WHEREAS, the receipt of this local option sales tax revenue will reduce the <br />need to Increase property taxes in our community. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />VERO BEACH, FLORIDA. THAT the City endorses the County's effort to adopt a <br />local option one -cent sales tax and recommends to Its voters that they support the <br />referendum. <br />2 <br />
