PROCLAMATION <br />in Support of Red Ribbon Week - October 23-27, 1989 <br />and Red Ribbon Day - October 24, 1989 <br />WHEREAS, the abuse of drugs and alcohol in this country <br />continues to pose a serious threat to the health, safety, <br />welfare, and well-being of children, youth and adults; and <br />WHEREAS, drug abuse among our children and youth touches <br />every segment of society. Not only is it present, but it is a <br />major problem of such gigantic proportions that families and <br />individuals from all walks of life are affected; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the entire community to <br />become involved in the fight to combat drug and alcohol abuse; <br />and many groups have organized to assist .in helping others to <br />become aware of the extent and nature of this devastating <br />problem; and <br />WHEREAS, the "Just Say No" movement is a national campaign <br />which is intended to assist in preventing and reversing the use <br />of drugs in schools and communities. Similarly, Red Ribbon Day <br />is intended to be a day of awareness wherein all community <br />members, along with our students, are being asked to wear red <br />ribbons to highlight the need to prevent the abuse of drugs and <br />alcohol; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of County <br />Commissioners, Indian River County, Florida that the week of <br />October 23-27, 1989 be recognized as <br />RED RIBBON WEEK <br />in Indian River County, and the Board further proclaims that the <br />day of October 24, 1989 be recognized as <br />RED RIBBON DAY <br />An Indian River County.
