He explained that the <br />building is to be of stucco construction and is designed to be <br />energy efficient. <br />Commissioner Bird asked if the building has the capability <br />of adding another floor at sometime, and Mr. Ramos stated that it <br />did not. The building is designed to take you to the year 2010 <br />or more. <br />Dr. Bernard Berman, Public Health Director, estimated that <br />staffing would be approximately 85 persons when we move in with <br />expansion capabilities of approximately 100-125 persons. <br />Extensive discussion ensued after Chairman Wheeler <br />questioned the taxpayers' responsibilities for the dental and <br />vision services to be added by the Health Department once the new <br />office is built, and Dr. Berman explained that no dental care is <br />available at the present time for indigents in the county and <br />that *they must go to the public health center in Fort Pierce. <br />State funds are available, but there is no office space for <br />dental care now. He noted that government has always been the <br />provider of last resort. <br />Commissioner Eggert felt there is little doubt that we are <br />going tobegetting increased pressure for treatment of AIDS. <br />Dr. Berman agreed, and pointed out that there are things on <br />the horizon that will be mandated for provision by the Public <br />Health Department. <br />Getting back to the building plans, Commissioner Eggert <br />understood that Mr. Ramos has figured that this building will <br />cost $3.2 million without furnishings, and Administrator Chandler <br />_-4 <br />advised that amount includes a contingency of $100,000. <br />Commissioner Eggert assumed that $300,000-$400,000 would <br />definitely be enough for furnishings because we are looking to <br />bring this project in at $3.5 million. <br />Dr. Berman advised that they are developing a room by room <br />listing of all of the furnishings required for the clinic, and <br />will have that list completed in the near future. <br />38 <br />
