Proclamation - Fred Weick_Day <br />P R O C L A M A T I O N <br />WHEREAS, FRED WEICK, a resident of Indian River County <br />and fifty year Rotarian is being honored by the Rotary Club of <br />Vero Beach for his achievements in aeronautical engineering and <br />research; and <br />WHEREAS., MR. WEICK was one of the -first engineers <br />employed by the original United States Mail Service, and located <br />and established a series of emergency flying fields for the first <br />night flying of mail throughout the midwest; and <br />WHEREAS, NASA is honoring him for his design efforts <br />while at Langley Research Center in Virginia, where he published <br />a paper in 1925 on propeller design for low powered planes that <br />was republished in 1989 because it is considered a classic by <br />aviation experts; and <br />WHEREAS, while at Engineering and Research Corporation, <br />MR. WEICK designed the Ercoupe aircraft, a two -seat all -metal <br />low -wing cantilever monoplane; and while a Professor of <br />Aeronautical Engineering at Texas A & M College, he designed a <br />revolutionary agricultural airplane AG -1 which had life-saving <br />standards for agricultural planes; and <br />WHEREAS, MR. WEICK, while at Piper Aircraft Corporation <br />from 1957-1969, designed and developed the Cherokee and Pawnee <br />aircraft; and <br />WHEREAS, MR. WEICK has received numerous safety and <br />aviation design awards and will be honored with the Daniel <br />Guggenheim Medal for development of the NACA cowling and the <br />steerable tricycle landing gear which resulted in practical <br />aircraft design and performance: <br />--- NOW, THEREFORE, BE..IT_PROCLAIMEp by the_Board of County <br />Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida that February 2, <br />1990 be recognized as - <br />FRED WEICK DAY <br />i <br />i in Indian River County.
