SUPPORT FUNDING FOR THE ARTS <br />Chairman Eggert believed the Board will recall that we sent <br />a Resolution to the State supporting grants being given to the <br />Theatre,, the Center for the Arts, etc. The Senate Appropriations <br />SubCommittee A has recommended zero funding for the Arts for next <br />year's budget, and she would like the Board's permission to <br />express our desire to have the State continue funding the Arts. <br />Commissioner Scurlock noted that we lately have sent a <br />couple of Resolutions to the State and said please fund, but <br />pointed out that they will be required to tax to supply these <br />monies. <br />Chairman Eggert stressed that her concern is the Library. <br />She agreed you do need to see a balance, but she could not see <br />taking everything out of this and putting it in roads or the HRS <br />system, which she felt is one of the most wasteful in the world. <br />Commissioner Scurlock noted that maybe we are getting the <br />message that the State will only fund essential services. He <br />does want to pursue getting our fair share, however. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Scurlock, SECONDED by Com- <br />missioner Wheeler, Commissioner Bird being out of the <br />Chambers, the Board unanimously (4-0) authorized the <br />Chairman to contact members of the Senate Appropria- <br />tions Committee indicating our support of appropriate <br />funding for the Arts. <br />OPPOSITION TO COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS ACT <br />Commissioner Wheeler referred to a letter sent to Chairman <br />Eggert by the Committee on Corrections, Florida House of <br />Representatives, in support of enacting a "Community Corrections <br />Act." He advised that the League of Counties is not supporting <br />this Bill nor is the Sheriffs' Association, and he would like to <br />authorize the Chairman to send a letter to the appropriate <br />41 [300K /"9 PAGE W, <br />APR 2 4 1990 <br />
