In the ensuing discussion, Board members indicated they felt <br />that was a good idea. Chairman Eggert believed that potentially <br />we need the entire 3 blocks in that location in any event, and <br />Commissioner Bird felt we should go on record with the City of <br />Vero Beach that if they are contemplating moving their Public <br />Works section out of that area, we would be interested in <br />acquiring it. <br />Director Davis informed the Board that the City recently <br />requested permission to culvert the 27th Street bridge by <br />Scotty's, but the Drainage District wanted the bridge. They feel <br />they have had problems with the 20th Avenue Canal even topping <br />its bank, and any constrictions at all in the canal system in <br />this area could have some repercussions on drainage capability. <br />Director Davis further noted that if they would allow us to <br />culvert the canal, it undoubtedly would have to be an awfully <br />large culvert and probably would cost around $300 a foot. <br />It was generally felt that we need to explore this possi- <br />bility, and Administrator Chandler agreed but felt that we also <br />need to be looking at acquiring those remaining properties in <br />that area. <br />Attorney Vitunac asked if the Board wished to acquire those <br />21 lots, which actually are right in the middle of what we <br />already own, and Commissioner -Scurlock believed it always has <br />been the position of the Commission in that entire area to <br />acquire whatever becomes available and is affordable and we have <br />the money for it, and the Board members concurred. <br />Commissioner Scurlock believed what has been suggested are <br />all wonderful ideas, but noted that we must think of next year's <br />taxes and what we can afford. <br />Administrator Chandler pointed out that actually we are in a <br />very difficult position with our parking situation, and the <br />School Board has an even more critical parking problem. <br />Commissioner Bird agreed but noted that we leased them a <br />certain amount of space and a certain amount of parking, and if <br />BOOK F'.��;c <br />31 <br />MAY 2199® <br />
