LMMMIOM <br />1.1 Demographics, Economics and Travel Characteristics <br />An understanding of the environment within which the Indian River County transit system <br />operates is important when planning for future development. This chapter provides a descriptive <br />overview of the community, including the demographic and socioeconomic conditions within the <br />County. The demographic and the socioeconomic characteristics of the County were largely <br />derived from the 2010 Decennial Census and the American Community Survey (ACS). A <br />description of each of these two data sources and their strengths and limitations are presented <br />below. <br />1.1.1 Decennial Census <br />The 2010 Decennial Census is the most comprehensive recent data available for evaluating <br />the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the County. Decennial Census figures <br />are based on actual counts of persons residing in the US and serve as the basis for <br />apportioning seats in the United States House of Representatives. They are also used for in- <br />state redistricting and distribution of Federal funds to states and localities. <br />During the Decennial Census process, the Census Bureau collects detailed demographic, <br />socioeconomic, and housing information at the county, census tract, census block group, and <br />the neighborhood level. The Census data provide vital information about a community's <br />demographic composition, including a description of traits such as age, sex, race, ethnicity, <br />household income, auto -ownership, and age characteristics. <br />Beginning in 2010, the US Census Bureau eliminated the census "long -form" questionnaire <br />and instead distributed only the census "short -form" questionnaire. In the past, the US Census <br />Bureau sent the short form questionnaire to most housing units and the long form <br />questionnaire to a sample of about 17% of households.
