The County has no public mass transit system, but the area <br />I <br />s served by one private inter -city bus line and two private taxi <br />companies. The bus terminal is located on U.S. 1, south of the <br />City of Vero Beach. There are two private taxi companies <br />operating within the County. <br />Policy Statements. <br />1. Encourage the development of pedestrian and bikeway <br />systems that are compatible with the traffic circu- <br />lation system through safe intersections, sidewalk <br />clearances, and bridge crossings. <br />2. Develop a 20 year Bikeways Plan. <br />3. Within 2.5 miles of public schools, Class I bikeways* <br />will be provided on collectors and arterials. <br />4. Develop a transportation -oriented bikeways system <br />with Class I bikeways along arterials, Class II <br />bikeways along collectors, and Class III along <br />local roads. Recreational bikeways should be <br />5. Develop programs to meet special transportation needs <br />of disadvantaged groups such as elderly, handicapped, <br />and poor. <br />6. Right-of-way widths will correspond to those indicated <br />in the Thoroughfare Plan. <br />2. Implementing ordinances will provide for right-of-way <br />indicated in Table I and require building setbacks <br />which insure corridors and intersections are <br />visually unobstructed. <br />
