It would require state, county, and other units <br />of local government to implement and absorb much of the very <br />substantial costs of a new federally mandated voter registration <br />program. <br />write, call or visit your Senator expressing your views on this <br />legislation with particulag otten 'on to the fiscaland <br />administrative burdens on your county Tf this new mandate is <br />imposed. -Let your Senator know if you will have to raise taxes <br />or -cut services if required to implement this mandate and whether <br />you see potential problems with fraud. <br />Urge support for S.921, introduced by Senator Dole and Stevens, <br />as an alternative to'S.250. It would provide $25 million over <br />three years -to state and local governments on a matching basis if <br />they wanted to implement, on a voluntary basis, voter <br />registration enhancement activities, including registration in <br />connection with driver's license applications, mail -in, and <br />agency based registration. <br />Letters to Senators can be addressed to the U.S. Senate, <br />Washington, DC 20510.
