PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING THE DAY, OCTOBER 23, 2016, AS <br />BREAST CANCER AWARENESS/WEAR PINK DAY <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast and the <br />malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread <br />(metastasize) to distant areas of the body; and <br />WHEREAS, the disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it too. 1 in 8 U.S. <br />women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A man's <br />lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000; and <br />WHEREAS, In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected <br />to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast <br />cancer. About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in <br />2016; and <br />WHEREAS, for women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any <br />other cancer, besides lung cancer. Death rates have been decreasing since 1989. Women under 50 <br />have experienced larger decreases. These decreases are thought to be a result of treatment <br />advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board does hereby designate the <br />day of October 23, 2016, as <br />BREAST CANCER AWARENESS/WEAR PINK DAY IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br />to continue increased public awareness of breast cancer and to promote research for <br />treatment and a cure. <br />Adopted this 18th day of October, 2016 <br />BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />Bob Solari, Chairman <br />Vice Chairman <br />F CLQ[ LJ.
