Both facilities were expanded in 2002. The North Indian River County <br />Library is now 25,445 square feet and the Indian River County Main <br />Library is 49,286 square feet. <br />The Indian River County Law Library was established in 1957. Indian <br />River County took over the complete responsibility of operating and <br />maintaining the Law Library in October, 1989. In January of 1995, the new <br />Law Library opened in the new Court house with 3,993 square feet. Due to <br />space needs of the Courthouse, the Law Library was relocated to the Main <br />Library. <br />In 2003, a small library outlet was opened in the Gifford Youth Activity <br />Center building. <br />For several years, discussions had taken place with Indian River State <br />College to build a branch on the Mueller Campus in Vero Beach. In 2002, <br />the Board of County Commissioners approved this location for the next <br />branch library. The Board also approved the expenditure from sales tax <br />revenues. <br />In March, 2004, the Board of County Commissioners approved a contract <br />with Harvard Jolly Cleese Toppe Architects and Ruth O'Donnell, library <br />consultant, to prepare the "Indian River County Library Master Facilities <br />Plan, 2005 — 2025." This report was approved by the Board of County <br />Commissioners on March 15, 2005. <br />In January, 2005, the Board of County Commissioners agreed to deposit <br />$4.3 million dollars in the Indian River State College Foundation account to <br />be eligible for a state dollar for dollar match from the Legislature. <br />The Legislature approved this match and plans proceeded with this facility. <br />The 30,000 square foot Brackett Joint -Use Library opened on October 28, <br />2009. <br />Government <br />The Indian River County Library System is a division of the General <br />Services Department.
