PROCLAMATION <br /> DESIGNATING THE DAY, OCTOBER 20, 2017, AS <br /> BREAST CANCER AWARENESS/WEAR PINK DAY <br /> IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br /> WHEREAS, breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast and the <br /> malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread <br /> (metastasize) to distant areas of the body; and <br /> WHEREAS, the disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it too. 1 in 8 U.S. <br /> women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. A man's <br /> lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000; and <br /> WHEREAS, In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected <br /> to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,410 new cases of carcinoma in situ (non- <br /> invasive) an early form of breast cancer. About 2,470 new cases of invasive breast cancer are <br /> expected to be diagnosed in men in 2017; and <br /> WHEREAS, for women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any <br /> other cancer, besides lung cancer. About 40,610 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2017 from <br /> breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989. Women under 50 have <br /> experienced larger decreases. These decreases are thought to be a result of treatment advances, <br /> earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br /> COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that the Board does hereby designate the <br /> day of October 20, 2017, as <br /> BREAST CANCER AWARENESS/WEAR PINK DAY IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY <br /> to continue increased public awareness of breast cancer and to promote research for <br /> treatment and a cure. <br /> Adopted this 17th day of October, 2017.
