ON MOTION by Commissioner Eggert, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Bird, the Board unanimously <br />approved the Minutes of the Regular Meetings <br />of 4/26/94 and 5/3/94, as written. <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br />Chairman Tippin requested that Item H be removed from the <br />Consent Agenda for discussion. <br />A. Proclamation - June 6, 1994 as D -Day Golden Anniversary <br />Remembrance <br />f <br />PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING JUNE 6, 1994 AS <br />D-DAY GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY REMEMBRANCE <br />IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA <br />WHEREAS, Tuesday, June 6, 1944 signaled the commencement of <br />"Operation Overlord" - a daring military invasion involving over <br />200,000 Allied soldiers and sailors and which initiated the <br />liberation of what was then termed "Fortress Europe" by Adolph <br />Hitler; and <br />.WHEREAS, that military incursion landed approximately <br />130,000 American and Allied troops onto various beaches in the <br />vicinity of Normandy, France under the command of General Dwight <br />D. Eisenhower;,jand <br />WHMUMS,•an additional 23,000 American and British airborne <br />troops were also parachuted or taken by glider into enemy <br />territory to secure certain tactically significant inland areas; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the landings and their accompanying military <br />operations, collectively known as D-day, involved almost 5,000 <br />ships and over 11,000 sorties by Allied aircraft and comprised <br />the largest, most complex military operation to date; and <br />WHEREAS, the landings were bitterly opposed by a fanatical <br />enemy who was overcome only by countless feats of incredible <br />leadership and bravery; and <br />WHEREAS, America's fighting forces suffered horrendous <br />losses on this date, including 1,465 killed -in -action, 3,184 <br />wounded, 1,928 missing -in -action and 26 captured; and <br />WHEREAS, the D-day assault stands as one of the most <br />significant and critical events df World War II, since its <br />tactical success ultimately led to the Allied victory in Europe, <br />which led to the eventual formation of enduring alliances; and <br />WHEREAS, Florida is home to the second-largest, most highly <br />concentrated population of World War II veterans: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that June 6, 1994 <br />be designated as <br />D-DAY GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY REMEMBRANCE <br />in. Indian River County, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of <br />D-day.
