SA <br />PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 13 THROUGH 19, 2018 AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />WHEREAS, there are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Indian River County Sheriffs Office <br />and Indian River County municipal police departments; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May <br />15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National <br />Police Week; and <br />WHEREAS, on average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in <br />the United States every 61 hours. Since the first known line -of -duty death in 1791, more than 20,000 <br />U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; and <br />WHEREAS, over the past decade (2007-2017) the average annual number of officer fatalities <br />has been 151. 135 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2017; and <br />WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund honors and remembers <br />those recently fallen law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate price and given their lives to <br />protect and serve; and <br />WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty were honored <br />during a Wreath Placement Ceremony on the morning of May 14 at the Indian River County <br />Courthouse. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 13-19, 2018 is recognized as <br />National Police Week in honor of the service of law enforcement officers in our community and <br />communities across the nation, and May 15 is recognized as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor <br />of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at Half -Staff. <br />Adopted this 15th day of May, 2018.
