PROCLAMATION <br />RECOGNIZING MAY 5 - 11, 2019 AS <br />NATIONAL TRAVEL & TOURISM WEEK <br />WHEREAS, the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce and Pelican Porch Visitor's Center, <br />as designated by the Board of County Commissioners, is one of the primary tourism destination <br />marketing agencies for the attraction of the eco -lovers, adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts <br />through their dedicated, passionate and reliable award winning promotion of our simple pleasures and <br />authentic treasures that include, but are not limited to our region's intrinsic, natural and recreational <br />resources; and <br />WHEREAS, travel has a positive effect on Florida and the nation's economic prosperity, growth <br />and image abroad, creating jobs at a faster rate than other sectors; and <br />WHEREAS, welcoming visitors from near and far always has been, and always will be, the <br />enduring ethos of the travel industry in Florida and Indian River County, with Indian River County <br />boasting tourist tax revenues for 2017-2018 of $2,962,323.31, up $294,264.61 or 11% from the 2016- <br />2017 fiscal year; and <br />WHEREAS, the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes that meetings, events <br />and incentive travel are core business functions that help companies strengthen business performance, <br />educate employees and customers and reward business accomplishments — which in turn boosts the <br />U.S. economy. In 2018, domestic and international business travelers spent $327.5 billion; and <br />WHEREAS, leisure travel, which accounts for more than three-quarters of all trips taken in the <br />U.S., spurs countless benefits to travelers' health and wellness, creativity, cultural awareness, <br />education, happiness, productivity and relationships; and <br />WHEREAS, travel matters to Indian River County. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, <br />INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA that May 5th through May 11th, 2019 be designated as NATIONAL <br />TRAVEL & TOURISM WEEK in Indian River County, and the Board calls this observance to the <br />attention of all our citizens. <br />Adopted this 7th day of May, 2019.
