Cooke Gravlee, chairman of the Rotary Club of Vero Beach, didn't see a problem with parking on the grass this year. The sod was new for last year's race. Grand Harbor will allow spectators to park inside their gate if we have a problem with overflow parking. Approximately 500 cars are expected to park diagonally off of Indian River Boulevard, and Grand Harbor helps by roping off the grass areas. If the road is not closed for the race, there would be insufficient parking. The race will run during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The last 1-1/2 hours is spent picking up trash. People are accustomed to using U.S. #1 during the race and it will not stop anyone from getting to the hospital. Commissioner Bird felt that with more and more people using the Boulevard every year that it is going to become more difficult to close it off for events such as this. MOTION WAS MADE by Commissioner Bird, SECONDED by Commissioner Eggert, to grant the closing of Indian River Boulevard for this race for one more year but look to using another road in the future. Under discussion, Commissioner Tippin suggested posting signs prior to the race showing U.S. #1 as an alternate route. THE CHAIRMAN CALLED FOR THE QUESTION. The Motion carried unanimously (4-0, Chairman Macht being absent.)
