B. <br />PROCLAMATION <br />HONORING MAJOR MILO THORNTON <br />OF THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County celebrates African American Pioneers who, through their service <br />in the business, public, and elected arenas, have paved the way for this and future generations; and <br />WHEREAS, Major Milo Thornton was born on the Treasure Coast on February 13, 1978, and <br />became a permanent resident of Indian River County in 1994 before graduating from Sebastian River <br />High School and earning associate and bachelor's degrees from Indian River State College; and <br />WHEREAS, after beginning his law enforcement career in 1997, Milo joined the Indian River <br />County Sheriff's Office as a patrolman and was swiftly promoted through the ranks of sergeant, <br />lieutenant, and captain, until achieving the rank of major in 2019; and <br />WHEREAS, Milo is a graduate of the Command Officers Development Course at the University <br />of Louisville's Southern Police Institute; a graduate of The Florida Department of Law Enforcement <br />Leadership Academy; and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police; and <br />WHEREAS, Milo has served as an adjunct instructor at the Indian River State College Public <br />Safety Training Complex for 14 years, teaching topics such as Introduction to Law Enforcement, Criminal <br />Investigations, Crime Scene to Court Room, Interviewing & Report Writing, and. Advanced Studies in <br />Organized Crime; and <br />WHEREAS, Milo further contributes to his community as a volunteer board member on several <br />non-profit and charitable organizations, and as a member of the Sunrise Rotary of Vero Beach. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the pioneer spirit and civic contributions of Major Milo <br />Thornton have greatly enriched Indian River County and the Treasure Coast, and that the Board extends <br />its sincere thanks for his outstanding efforts and trailblazing career with the Sheriff's Office. <br />Adopted this 18th day of February, 2020.
