PROCLAMATION <br />HONORING BROTHER JIMMY MACKEY <br />WHEREAS, Indian River County celebrates African American Pioneers who, through their <br />service in the business, public, and elected arenas, have paved the way for this and future generations; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Brother Jimmy Mackey was born in The Bahamas on July 5, 1918, arrived in Indian <br />River County in 1944, married Trovata, and was blessed with six children, six grandchildren, and eleven <br />great grandchildren; and <br />WHEREAS, Jimmy was a lifelong contributor to the citrus industry in Indian River County, <br />personally coordinating and providing transportation for local workers who depended upon his efforts <br />to make a living for their families; and <br />WHEREAS, Jimmy continued his tireless efforts beyond the citrus season, driving busloads of <br />workers to Virginia to assist with apple harvesting in the summer and fall months; and <br />WHEREAS, on such a trip in 1965, Jimmy visited St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Mount Airy, North <br />Carolina, and returned with the idea of starting a local Choir's Union; and <br />WHEREAS, with the help of Sister Eunice Jones, Jimmy established the Indian River County <br />Choir's Union, was elected its first Vice President, and thus began a cherished, 55 -year tradition in <br />Indian River County that continues to this day. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the pioneer spirit and civic contributions of Brother Jimmy <br />Mackey have greatly enriched Indian River County and the Treasure Coast, and that the Board extends <br />its sincere thanks for his outstanding efforts. <br />Adopted this 18th day of February, 2020.
