PROCLAMATION <br />DESIGNATING MARCH OF 2021 AS <br />AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH <br />WHEREAS, the American Red Cross touches millions of lives each year as they carry out the organization's 140 - <br />year mission of preventing and alleviating suffering; and <br />WHEREAS, here in Indian River County, local families rely on American Red Cross volunteers for comfort and hope <br />while coping with disasters; and <br />WHEREAS, during these most trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Florida Red Cross provides food, <br />shelter, financial assistance, and comfort to individuals and families in need, as well as casework, guidance, and much <br />more to help survivors recover from disasters large and small, and all at no cost to the recipients; and <br />WHEREAS, last year, our local Red Cross chapter responded to more than 210 disasters and trained over 500 <br />volunteers in disaster response, with Red Cross volunteers especially addressing the urgent needs of Indian River <br />County residents affected by home fires with food, lodging, and other recovery support; and <br />WHEREAS, Treasure Coast American Red Cross volunteers support local families in many other ways, such as <br />providing critical safety and disaster readiness training, installing free smoke alarms, and creating fire preparedness <br />plans; and <br />WHEREAS, the lifesaving work of the Red Cross is vital to strengthening our community's resilience, and nearly <br />200 years since the birth of founder Clara Barton, they continue to advance her noble legacy and commitment to caring <br />for people in need. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, INDIAN RIVER <br />COUNTY, FLORIDA that the month of March, 2021, be designated as Red Cross Month in Indian River County and <br />that the Board encourages all citizens to support this organization, through volunteering and charitable giving, in its <br />noble humanitarian mission to alleviate human suffering in the face. of emergencies. <br />Adopted this 16th day of March, 2021.
