Many families with young children face
crisis such as the loss of unemployment, inadequate housing, an illness striking a child or his/her
parent, or the breakdown of a vital relationship. Others are caught in the trap of debt, poverty,
domestic violence drug/alcohol misuse, or incidents that find them dealing with the police/the
courts. These issues can and often blur together, escalating to a breaking point. During such crisis
parents struggle to provide safe and caring environments for their children. The risks are often
further elevated if the parent is socially isolated, without extended family or friends available. As
pressures mount, with minimal relief in sight, increased parental stress can result in incidences of
child abuse and neglect and possibly the need for state involvement and custody. However, with
the support of SFFC these situations can be averted.
SFFC intervenes prior to abuse and neglect through a community of volunteers motivated by
compassion to keep children safe and ultimately together with their families. Parents (referred to
as placing parent) voluntarily place their children in a safe, loving home (host family homes) where
they are cared for (average of 6 weeks) while other volunteers (family and resource friends) wrap
around and support the parent to help them get back on their feet and restore stability to their
lives.
SFFC has three objectives: 1) prevent child abuse and neglect by providing safe, temporary
homes for children from families in crisis, 2) support and stabilize families in crisis by providing
mentoring and referrals to appropriate resources, and 3) deflect children from entering the child
welfare system by keeping families intact and reunifying children with their parents.
Connecting with a community support system that strengthens the parent's capability to cope with
