El <br />• <br />The commercial activities located along North Gifford Road include <br />bars, pool halls, and grocery stores but also include barber <br />shops, attorney's offices, and restaurants. <br />The U.S. Highway #1 corridor includes several intensive <br />commercial uses. This area includes the following packing houses: <br />Dole, Riverfront Groves, Indian River, Leroy Smith, Quality Fruit, <br />and the Hartfield Citrus Corporation. Other heavy commercial uses <br />that occupy this area are the U.S. Trade Center (including <br />contractors trades & storage businesses), Sturgis Lumber Company, <br />and several warehouses. <br />Industrial <br />The primary location for industrial activities in the Gifford <br />area occurs along North Gifford Road between Kings Highway and <br />43rd Avenue, and is primarily devoted to auto salvage business. <br />Several auto salvage establishments, a millworks, and a scrap <br />metal yard are located in this area. Also, an agriculture <br />implements dealer, Atlantic Machine Works, Florida Truss, and <br />w Murray Construction Company occupy this corridor. Due south of <br />this corridor on South Gifford Road is Plant Products, <br />Incorporated, which manufactures fertilizer for agricultural <br />operations. Further east on South Gifford Road is H.J. Jackson <br />Citrus Incorporated, which includes trucking, storage, and repair <br />services. <br />Institutional <br />The Gifford area contains a large number of institutional <br />uses including Dodgertown Elementary School, Middle 6 School, <br />Middle 7 School, a Head Start Center, the Indian River County <br />Mosquito Control Facility, the Humane Society, a Florida <br />Department of Transportation facility, the County road and bridge <br />department facilities, the new county jail, and more than fifteen <br />churches. Other institutional uses concentrated along 37th Street <br />east of U.S. #1 include Indian River Memorial Hospital, a <br />Rehabilitation Hospital, a Psychiatric hospital, and three nursing <br />homes. <br />a <br />day, <br />
