would impair the structural efficiency of the <br />base course, the contractor shall remove such <br />® brdeks or checks by re -scarifying, reshaping, <br />adding base material where necessary and recom- <br />pacting. <br />Thickness check shall be made as directed by the <br />engineer. <br />2. Soil Cement Base <br />The material used shall conform with the require- <br />ments specified in the D.O.T. Standard Specifica- <br />tion -for Road and Bridge Construction. That is, <br />Portland cement, Type 1, water which shall be <br />clean and practically free of oil, acid, alkali, <br />chloride, organic matter, or other deleterious <br />substances, and the soil for this base course <br />shall consist of the natural material in the road- <br />way or selected soil placed in the roadbed. Port- <br />land cement shall be applied in the amount deter- <br />mined by tests run by the engineer for the n_articular <br />soil to be used. No procession of the base shall <br />be started until all tests of the soil to be used <br />have been completed and the exact quantity of cement <br />required for the particular soil has been determined. <br />The quantity of water required shall be the amount <br />necessary for optimum moisture content in the com- <br />pacted mixture. The hand squeeze for determining <br />moisture content may be used. <br />Unless otherwise approved, a Seaman Minter or P & H <br />Pulvi Mixer shall be used to mix.the material in <br />place and a roller suitable ':o provide required <br />density shall be used for compaction. <br />Before undertaking this work the sub -grade shall <br />.have been shaped and compacted as specified in <br />Section 2. Prior to the application of cement, the <br />soil to he treated shall be pulverized for sufficient.-- <br />width <br />ufficient._width and depth to give the compacted cross section <br />shown on the plans. All roots and other foreign <br />matter shall be removed. <br />After the.base material is shaped to the approximate <br />cross section as shown on the plan the specified. <br />quantity of Portland cement required shall be dis- <br />tributed uniformly over the surface. No cement <br />shall be applied where the moisture content sneci- <br />fied by the Engineer. No cement shall be applied <br />-4- <br />
