40 <br />2. The sub -grade width shall be two feet wider than <br />the base course with the exception that the sub - <br />'grade width shall be such as to include the curb <br />and gutter sections when they are to be constructed. <br />Approval of sub -grade shall be obtained before the <br />base course is begun. <br />D. Base Course: <br />1. Lime Rock Base or Cemented Coquina Material <br />The material used shall conform with the require- <br />ments specified in the D.O.T. Standard Specifica- <br />tions for Road and Bridge Construction under <br />Section 503 approved and adopted Anril 1, 1973, <br />subject to supplements and new nublications as <br />issued, approved and adopted by the D.O.T. <br />No forms shall be required unless specified. <br />The lime rock shall be transported and dumped by <br />approved methods. <br />The lime rock shall be spread uniformly with equip- <br />ment approved by the engineer. <br />All segregated areas of lime or course rock shall <br />be removed and replaced with well -graded rock. <br />After spreading is completed, the entire surface <br />shall be scarified and shaped so as to produce the <br />exact grade and cross-section after compaction. <br />When the material does not have the proper moisture' <br />content to insure the required density, wetting or <br />drying will be required. As soon as proper condi- <br />tions of moisture are attained the material shall <br />be compacted to the satisfaction of the Engineer <br />and/or to an average density of at least 95% of <br />the maximum density obtainable A.A.S.H.O. Method <br />T99, modified at optimum moisture. <br />Unless otherwise directed by the engineer, the <br />surface shall be "hardolaned" with a blade grader <br />immediately prior to the annlication of the prime <br />coat, to remove the thin -glazed or cemented surface <br />-of the base. If at any time the sub -grade material <br />should become mixed with the base -course material, <br />-the contractor shall, without additional compen- , <br />sation, dig out and remove the mixture, reshane.^- <br />and compact the sub -grade and replace the materials <br />removed with clean base material, which shall be <br />shaped and compacted as specified above. If cracks <br />or checks appear in the base, either before or after <br />priming, which, in the opinion of the engineer, <br />-3- <br />
