RESOLUTION NO. 83-20 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br />OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORTING AN <br />AMENDMENT TO FLORIDA STATUTES §125.0104 WHICH WOULD <br />ALLOW THE IMPOSITION OF A LOCAL OPTION TOURIST TAX <br />TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BEACH RENOURISHMENT AND CARE. <br />WHEREAS, Florida Statutes §125.0104 currently allows <br />counties to impose a local option tourist development tax after <br />referendum approval of the voters of the County, and <br />WHEREAS, within the last five (5) years local govern- <br />ments have experienced the increasing responsibility to provide <br />services to County residents and tourists who come to Florida to <br />enjoy the environment, and <br />WHEREAS, the existence of: beaches has made Florida one <br />of the most attractive areas of the United States to visit and has <br />made tourism a leading industry in Florida, and <br />WHEREAS, beaches are coastal counties' largest tourist <br />attraction, serve the residents of inland counties' recreational <br />needs and enhance tourism in inland counties by providing the <br />ability of Florida visitors to enjoy the beach during their stay <br />in inland counties, and <br />WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of all the residents <br />of Florida to establish a tax system where both tourists and resi- <br />dents who receive benefits from the existence of clean, free <br />beaches help pay for the renourishment and care, and <br />WHEREAS, it is also imperative that any amendments to <br />Chapter 125.01.04 protect those interests and projects that already <br />exist and are currently funded by existing tourist development <br />taxes, and <br />WHEREAS, without beach renourishment, improvement and <br />care programs tourism throughout the state will diminish, and <br />Florida residents will have lost a vast natural and economic <br />resource. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY <br />COMMISSIONERS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: <br />1. The Board of County Commissioners of Indian River <br />County respectfully request the legislative delegation of Indian <br />River County to introduce and support an amendment to Florida <br />-1- <br />
