Long, P.A. <br />The Board reviewed a Memorandum of April 17, 1996: <br />TO: Board of County Commissioners <br />FROM: Terrence P. O'Brien - Assistant County Attorney <br />DATE: April 17, 1996 <br />RE: SPECIAL PUBLIC DEFENDER CONTRACT <br />Since January, 1993, the County has had a contract with the law offices <br />of James T. Long, P.A., to provide legal representation of indigent <br />adults and juveniles in certain types of criminal cases. The contract <br />was awarded after a committee comprised of a commissioner, the chief <br />judge of the 19th Circuit, the Public Defender and the County Attorney <br />determined that it was both cost-effective and efficient for the County <br />to enter into such a contract. The Board of County Commissioners <br />then published an invitation to bid, and the contract was established on <br />a flat fee per case basis of $600.00 for non -capital felony cases and <br />$300.00 for misdemeanor and juvenile. The original contract had an <br />expiration date of December 31, 1994 but was extended to December 31, <br />1995. <br />Mr. Long has agreed to a further extension of the contract for one <br />year (to December 31, 1996) under the same terms. <br />It is recommended that the Board extend the subject contract to <br />December 31, 1996. <br />ON MOTION by Commissioner Eggert, SECONDED by <br />Commissioner Macht, the Board unanimously approved <br />a one-year extension (to December 31, 1996) to the <br />contract of James T. Long, P.A., as recommended in <br />the memorandum. <br />AMENDMENT NO. 2 TO SPECIAL PUBLIC DEFENDER CONTRACT <br />IS ON FILE IN THE OFFICE OF THE CLERK TO THE BOARD <br />E. M.A.C.E.
