Gifford Youth Orchestra <br />After School Youth Enrichment/Music Education <br />Grant amount: $25,000 <br />Funds used: $25,000 <br />Total children served: 95 unduplicated children <br />Cost per child: $76.04 <br />Focus Area: Quality Remediation and Enrichment Program <br />Program Description: The Gifford Youth Orchestra's Music Education Program is an after- <br />school program designed to keep children off the street and on the stage by providing music <br />education and other support programs throughout the year culminating in spring, summer, and <br />fall recitals and an annual concert as report cards of their progress. <br />Although focused on music, the program offers a range of methods to build skills and <br />experiences in young people through music education: tutor other children and senior citizens; <br />build performance skills; earn money by tutoring and performing and budgeting those funds; <br />building confidence and self-esteem through performances and tutoring; cultural and social <br />awareness and leadership skills through community service, workshops, and student meetings, <br />and meditation movements to cope with PTSD from covid and other issues connected with <br />poverty communities primarily filled with black and brown children. <br />The classes and training are for at -risk youth in kindergarten through 12th grade. Enrolled <br />children are from low-income, single parent homes throughout Indian River County. <br />Collaboration: Activities during this quarter included collaboration involved our Summer Camp <br />collaborating with the Gifford Youth Achievement Center for space, the Gifford Aquatic Center <br />for space and swimming, the Gifford Community Center for the Summer Performance, and The <br />Source for food. All instrumental classes were in-person this year. <br />July 2022 The GYO Staff presented its annual Summer Camp program. The camp was held at <br />the Gifford Community Center, the Gifford Aquatic Center and in the two GYAC portable <br />modules during the week of June 27 to July 1s1, 2022. Twenty-five children attended: 18 from <br />the GYO classes and 7 from various communities in Indian River County. Camp was an all -day <br />event including classes in violin, cello, piano, voice, drama, art, and ensemble. Additional <br />sessions for swimming, outdoor activities, and 2 meals were included. The staff consisted of <br />five paid teachers and seven volunteers and 5 guest speakers. The Camp Director was a <br />highlight for the GYO — Marissa Rollins, GYO graduate in 2015 returned to Vero Beach from her <br />public -school teaching position to organize and supervise this 2022 Summer Camp!
