Proclamation <br />DEDICATING SEPTEMBER 23RD AS "SICKLE CELL AWARENESS DAY" <br />-Whereas, Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited red blood cell disorder that can cause chronic pain <br />and other serious health conditions including vision problems, fatigue, joint damage, heart issues, bacterial <br />infections, kidney failure, and strokes; and <br />`Whereas, in United States more than 100,000 people are diagnosed with SCD, which primarily affects the <br />African American community, those afflicted are often forced to put their lives on hold due to extended hospital <br />stays; and <br />-Whereas, over 370,000 people worldwide lose their lives to Sickle Cell Disease each year and there is no <br />known cure, although stem cell and bone marrow transplants sometimes work, low donor participation and <br />treatment-related complications often put those options out of reach; and <br />-Whereas, the Board of County Commissioners supports all efforts to address and research this disease <br />in hopes of one day finding a cure. <br />Now, ,herefore, be it Proclaimedby the Board of County Commissioners of Ind'can River <br />County, FCorida, by the Board of County Commissioners of Indian River County, Florida, that September 23rd, <br />2023 shall be known, designated, and set aside as Sickle Cell Awareness Day in Indian River County, Florida. <br />Adopted this day of 12th day of September, 2023.
